Chip
Chip is an English shorthair guinea pig he came to
see us in May because his owners had noticed a swollen lip. On examination
our vet discovered that Chip had a fistula (hole) from the inside
to the outside of his lip which was infected and causing an abscess.
Guinea pigs and other small rodents can have big
problems with these types of infections and they are very difficult
to clear. In addition they don’t respond well to anaesthesia
being at a much higher risk of complications than a cat or dog.
Chip had to undergo 2 separate procedures under
anaesthetic to clean and drain the abscess including having an indwelling
swab soaked with manuka honey. This agent has exceptional healing
properties in these cases.
Chip came into see us on a daily basis to be given
antibiotics and to have the abscess flushed and cleaned. After 2
weeks of this treatment the wound had almost healed over and Chip
was starting to get back to normal.
Chip was extremely brave throughout all his treatment
and this is why we have made him pet of the month.
