The Pets practice pet of the monthOctober 2009

Basil

Basil is a 17 year old cross breed dog, who came into us in August last year.

He had sneezing and nose bleeds that had been going on for about a week. Although his teeth were a little worn (which is not unusual for a dog of his age) the roots seemed healthy so further investigations were required to establish the cause.

Basil was admitted to the hospital and was given a general anaesthetic along with a lot of supportive treatments (important for a dog of his age).

X-rays were taken of his chest, nasal passages and sinuses and an endoscopic camera was passed up his nose to see what was going on. The X-rays and the endoscopy of his nose showed a mass in the right side. The mass was biopsied and sent for examination at the laboratory and was found to be cancer of the nose (Sarcoma).

Basil came back into the hospital and was prepared for major surgery. A flap was made in the top of his nose and as much of the tumour was removed as possible, however it became clear that surgery alone was not going to be the whole answer for Basil. He needed some additional treatment in the form of radiotherapy to kill the remaining cancer cells. Basil was referred to a specialist clinic where he had a CT scan and a course of radiotherapy.

Basil’s owners had taken out Pet Plan insurance when Basil was younger so they could have all the tests and treatment he needed without worrying about costs.

Basil came into see us recently and is doing amazingly well. He still has to take some medication but he is very well in himself and has been an incredibly brave little dog. This is why we have decided to make Basil pet of the month.
