Timmy
Timmy is a three-year-old chinchilla, who came to
see us when his owner became concerned that he was having difficulty
eating.
On examination by our vet Emma Hooper, Timmy seemed
underweight and had wet fur under the left side of his chin. She
opened his mouth and discovered his left upper molar tooth was very
overgrown. Emma booked him an appointment for an anaesthetic, examination
and treatment for his teeth.
The next day Timmy was admitted for his dental treatment.
He was given his anaesthetic and further inspection of his teeth
showed his jaw was out of line, explaining why his tooth had become
overgrown as it was not wearing down naturally as it should do when
he eats. His left upper molar tooth was curving downwards and outwards
making it very hard for Timmy to eat.
This is a common problem in chinchillas we treated
Timmy by cutting the tooth back as far as possible and filing it
down to make sure there were no sharp edges. All of Timmy’s
other teeth were in good condition.
Timmy recovered well from his anaesthetic and was
eating well the next day. He will now have to have regular dental
check ups and has been given wood to gnaw on to help prevent his
teeth from over-growing again.
