The Pets practice pet of the monthJune 2010

Terry

Terry is a 5 years old male cat who was brought into the surgery back in March with a very painful left side. He did not like to be stroked and his owners reported he was feeling lethargic.

On examination we found that the left side of his body was very swollen and there were numerous bite wounds in this area. There was serious infection spreading through Terry’s skin and underlying tissue and we were concerned that the infection may start to spread and cause septicaemia.

Terry underwent several surgeries to clean the affected area and remove dead and infected tissue. X-rays were taken to check for any spread to his abdominal cavity and biopsies/blood samples were taken to try to characterise the infection. Throughout this period Terry had constant antibiotic and pain relieving medication and often had to be hospitalised and supported with intravenous fluids.

After six weeks of treatment the active infection had been resolved but Terry still had a hard area of inflamed fatty tissue that was painful and not responding to treatment. A final surgery was performed to remove this area of tissue and Terry has not looked back since.

Cat bite abscesses are very common and are usually resolved quite quickly. However, although Terry suffered recognised complications which meant that his treatment cost thousands of pounds, he was fully medically insured which reduced the cost to his owners significantly.

Terry was a lovely patient and coped well with long recovery and this is why we have made him pet of the month.
