Rabby
Rabby is a 4 year old male English Lop Eared rabbit.
He suffers with a tooth problem that is very common in rabbits.
Rabbits’ teeth
grow continually and are filed down and kept short when a rabbit
eats. Unfortunately, this does not always happen and the molar teeth
(back teeth) become too long. This will stop the rabbit from eating
and grooming, they will generally become unwell. Quite often an anaesthetic
is needed to file the teeth and correct the problem.
In Rabby’s
case, his tooth problem caused him to have an abscess that had grown
to the size of a golf ball, this needed thorough treatment to cure
the problem and he now needs regular dental checks to make sure it
doesn’t re-occur. Rabby stayed in The Pets Practice hospital
for seven days. Whilst he was here he had three operations to reduce
the size of the abscess, plus constant nursing care to help him to
remain strong. He was unable to eat so he was syringe fed regularly
throughout the day and night, he was on an intravenous drip and also
received lots of much-needed TLC!
He was eventually allowed to go
home, but he continued to need regular antibiotic injections. To
start with he came in on a daily basis, we then taught Rabbys’ owner
how to inject and these injections were then continued at home. Rabby
was given the all-clear for his abscess problem but he recently came
in for a dental check because his owner noticed that he wasn’t
eating as well as he should have been. This was caught very early
on and we were able to anaesthetise Rabby and file his teeth. He
can now eat again and is back to his normal life!
We have made Rabby
our ‘Pet of the Month’ for July because he must be one
if the bravest rabbits, he has a cheeky personality and keeps us
all entertained with his antics when he comes in to see us!
