Ebony
Ebony Heaton is a 10 month old black Labrador puppy. When he was
six and a half months old his owner noticed him going lame in his
left foreleg - especially after vigorous or lengthy exercise. Inspite
of Ebony receiving pain relieving tablets the lameness improved only
slightly. In fact he also developed slight lameness in his right
foreleg.
After the initial examination the problem was isolated to his elbows.
It was decided to anaesthetise him and x-ray both joints. Ebony was
found to be suffering from a disease called Osteochondritis which
can cause damage to the cartilage in several limb joints.
In Ebony's
case it was affecting both elbows and was also causing slight deformity
of the bones within the joint. It was decided to operate using keyhole
surgery to perform arthroscopy. During the operation Mr Sharratt
removed all the diseased cartilage and flushed it out of the joint.
He also performed an osteotomy to correct a slight deformity in the
left elbow.
Ebony required intensive care and pain relief for several
days following the surgery, which was performed in two separate operations,
one in June and another in October.
We are pleased to say that over
the last eight weeks Ebony has steadily improved and is now back
to his normal bouncing self - thoroughly enjoying his exercise.
