Holly
Holly is an 11 and a half year old black Labrador
who came in to see us back in September 2009 because her owner had
noticed an inflamed lump on her head. Haydn advised that we should
check exactly what this lump was by removing it and sending it to
the laboratory for histopathology as it looked nasty.
Unfortunately
our suspicions were confirmed as the lab diagnosed a mast cell tumour
with a significant degree of malignancy. This meant that the tumour
could already have spread to both the area around the original tumour
or to another organ in the body.
We watched and waited and saw Holly for regular checks and about
two months after the original surgery another suspicious lump was
found close to the site of the first tumour. A needle biopsy confirmed
that this was another mast cell tumour.
Holly underwent a second anaesthetic a few days later. A radical
resection of the tumour together with chest x-rays, abdominal ultrasound
and a full blood screen to check for other tumours within her body
were performed. Fortunately none were found and Holly has made a
full recovery from her surgery.
We will continue to monitor Holly over the next
few months but she is doing very well at the moment.
