Unfortunately, some rabbits fail to keep their back ends clean of the faeces they produce. There can be a variety of reasons for this but the end result is that faecal impaction can occur under the tail.
Unfortunately, this attracts flies, who lay their eggs in this area. These eggs then hatch into maggots which very quickly start eating into the skin and body of rabbits. This is a very serious condition and requires owners to be vigilant to guard against it. The best prevention is to examine your rabbit under the tail and groin area daily to check there is no build-up of faeces.
Additionally, we recommend the application of a product to the rear of rabbits every 10 weeks from spring through to autumn (when flies are mostly presnt) to help protect against this problem.
