There are many worms that puppies and kittens can pick up during their daily activities, such as hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Some are more prone to picking up worms than others but, in general, if you take your dog for lots of walks or your cats go out of the house, they will come into contact with areas populated by foxes and other wild animals, and can easily pick up worms (amongst other things such as lungworm in dogs, foxes mange, ear mites, etc).
Heavy worm infestations can cause a variety of signs including vomiting, diarrhoea and weight loss. The worm Toxacara can also affect humans in rare instances.
For these reasons it is very important to worm puppies and kittens regularly to prevent them from contracting worms. This is very easily achieved by giving your pet a simple tasty tablet.
Recommended worming protocol
Puppies and kittens: Worming treatment monthly until 6 months of age, then every 3 months.
Adult dogs and cats: Worming treatment every 3 months
Note: Sometimes we will advise that it is not necessary to worm to this exact protocol, so please feel free to contact one of our trained Veterinary Nurses for a free chat and we can advise you of the best protocol for your dog.
