Worming

At the Pets Practice, we recommend that your pet dog is wormed regularly. There are many worms that dogs can pick up during their daily activities, such as hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Some dogs, particularly farmyard dogs, are more prone to picking up worms than others but, in general, all dogs that are exercised outside will come into contact with areas inhabited by foxes, etc, and can easily pick up worms (amongst other things such as lungworm, foxes mange, ear mites, and so on).

Heavy worm infestations can cause a variety of symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea and weight loss. The worm Toxacara can also affect humans in rare instances.

For these reasons it is very important to worm your dog regularly to prevent them from contracting worms. This is very easily achieved by giving your pet a simple tasty tablet.

Recommended worming protocol

Puppies: Worming treatment monthly until 6 months of age, then every 3 months.

Adult dogs: Worming treatment every 3 months

Note: Sometimes we will advise that it is not necessary to worm to this exact protocol, so please feel free to contact one of our trained Veterinary Nurses for a free chat and we can advise you of the best protocol for your dog.
