Diabetes in dogs
Diabetes can be seen in both dogs and cats. They suffer from different
types of diabetes so the following information concerns dogs only.
Diabetes in dogs is similar to human diabetes. If a dog is
seen with the following symptoms then we would probably be worried
that diabetes is the possible cause.
The symptoms include:
- Drinking excessively
- Urinating more than usual
- Eating more than normal
- Weight loss
If left untreated dangerous toxins can build up in the body causing:
- Depression
- Lethargy
- Dehydration
- Anorexia
- Vomiting
This can then lead to a dog becoming critically ill and extreme
cases can result in coma and death.
A blood and urine test is taken to diagnose diabetes. This will
allow us to start treating the dog as soon as possible.
Diabetes cannot be cured but it can be treated to allow
the dog to live a normal life. A regular routine consisting of a
special diet and daily injections of insulin is the required treatment.
Diabetes often causes a dog to become blind, and this is probably
the most life changing aspect of this condition. However, dogs learn
to adapt and rely on their other senses in day-to-day life.
As part of the diagnosis and on-going monitoring of the condition,
dogs will sometimes need to stay in hospital for a few days and
have repeated blood glucose tests so that we can check for a good response
to treatment.
