Meet the team

Haydn SharrattHaydn Sharratt
BVSc CertSAS MRCVS

I grew up on a sheep farm in South Africa and moved to the UK soon after qualifying in 1994. After travelling the world for a few years I settled in London, left Large Animal Practice behind and have worked exclusively in Small Animal Practice ever since. I started specialising in 1996 and in 1999 achieved the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery.

My main work interests are in the areas of Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and minimally invasive diagnostics and surgical techniques. Procedures that we perform regularly at the Practice include:

  • Spinal Surgery for the treatment of disc protrusions (slipped discs).
  • Treating Orthopaedic problems such as chronic arthritis, fracture repair surgery, joint surgery including the surgical treatment of cruciate ligament disease/rupture in dogs (and much more).
  • Soft tissue surgery for the removal of cancerous tumours, hernia repair surgery, chest surgery such as lung surgery and many other treatments.
  • Minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical treatments (keyhole surgery). Keyhole surgery refers to the use of small instruments with cameras to examine & treat many conditions, but here at The Pets Practice we are able to perform arthroscopy (keyhole surgery of joints), rhinoscopy (keyhole surgery of noses), otoscopy (keyhole surgery of ears), gastroscopy (endoscopy of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum), colonoscopy (endoscopic examination of the colon & large intestine) and cystoscopy (endoscopy of the bladder and lower urinary tract). The benefits of keyhole surgery are enormous and result in better diagnostics, less painful treatments and happier pets.

Away from the surgery I still think of becoming a pro golfer, rugby player or cricketer but the dream remains just that and my handicap is in a steady state of decline. My luck started to improve in 2005 when I married Astrid and things got even better with the arrival of daughter number one in November 2006, followed by daughter number two in November 2008. We have two ageing cats, Tigger and Toby, who unfortunately are also suffering from some health issues (diabetes and a mouth tumour respectively) so I am a walking advert for the benefit of a good quality pet insurance policy.

Kylie Birch
Veterinary Surgeon

Kylie qualified as a Vet from Melbourne University in Australia, working there for several years after graduating. She moved to the UK and the travel bug kicked in and spent a couple of years working as a locum around the country. She joined The Pets Practice in September 2009 and has quickly become a valued member of our team.

As well as the medical and surgical aspects of veterinary medicine, Kylie is particularly interested in dog training and behaviour. This keen interest has allowed us to introduce the only Veterinary Surgeon-led puppy socialisation classes at The Pets Practice on Tuesday evenings. These have proved extremely popular with our clients as well as the puppies that attend. She also runs behavioural consultations for our clients and their pets, and is quickly developing an excellent reputation in this field. If you are interested in discussing any aspect of your dog’s behaviour with Kylie, please feel free to give us a call and an appropriate appointment can be made.

Kylie owns an Australian Cattle dog called Tooheys who travelled over to the UK with her from Australia. In her spare time she enjoys doing agility with him as well as travelling, reading and just generally relaxing.

JillyJilly Martin
Veterinary Nurse

Jilly is from South Africa but the travel bug infected her some years ago and she has spent the last few years nursing her way around the world. Jilly qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in Sydney, Australia but has spent time working in Canada and Peru. She settled in the UK in early 2009, joining The Pets Practice team shortly thereafter. She has a passion for emergency and surgical nursing and in her free time loves to go to the theatre and travel the world.

Karen Langham-Hobart
Veterinary Nurse

Karen works weekends at the Pets Practice. She first met Haydn around nine years ago when they worked at the same veterinary hospital.

Karen is currently studying fits in her study around shifts at The Pets Practice. After graduating with a BSc degree in June 2010 she immediately signed up for an MSc in September.

She has three cats, Jonathan Pudding, Ted and Bump who are very tolerant of the many recuperating wildlife casualties she regularly inflicts upon them. In fact, they are always a bit disappointed when the yearly gang of orphaned ducklings find their wings and head back into the wild!

Pauline JarvisPauline Jarvis
Client Services Manager

Pauline joined the team at The Pets Practice in October 2007 after taking early retirement from the NHS where she worked as a Radiographer / Clinical Manager at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals. She now works part-time at the practice as the Client Services Manager, carrying out a range of administrative and reception duties.

She has a lovely little dog called Saffy, a Miniature Schnauzer, who comes to work with her. Outside of work she enjoys meeting up with friends, keeping fit at the gym and lots of long walks with Saffy.

Natasha has worked at The Pets Practice as the friendly part-time receptionist for more than four years now. She doesn’t have any pets but loves all the animals that visit the surgery, especially all the new puppies and kittens. She tries to stay as active as possible and loves reading, watching movies and listening to all different genres of music whenever she gets a spare minute.

Chris JonesChris Jones
Receptionist

Chis lives in Hayes and joined the team at The Pets Practice as a part-time receptionist in July 2009 after taking early retirement from The Nationwide Building Society, where she worked for 30 years.

Chris has been coming to The Pets Practice with her pets for many years and always thought it would be a lovely place to work!

She has a black Labrador/Bull Terrier called Shadow who is quite challenging as he tries to eat anything and everything! She also has a dear old cat called Charlie, two rabbits, Batman and Jean-Luc, and four ferrets – Baloo, Milo, Number 2 and Number 3.
